However, content wise, the lyrics are very similar. They are usually faster and somewhat mor emelodic, and his rapping is like another percussion instrument in the song. And, for those of you who have heard "Because I got High" from Jay and Silent Bob, musically speaking, none of his other songs are like that one. It is obviously written by someone who finds sex and drugs immaturely funny, but in a way, it is also making fun of sex and drug humor. I think it was kind of proper that he did a song for Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back because lots of Afroman's humor is like the "low brow" aspect of Kevin Smith's humor. From his parody in Colt 45 of "Rapper's Delight" to all of the other funny sexual content and drug jokes he has, it makes you laugh after numerous times hearing it. Then, his lyrics are just hilarious, with great rhymes. The songs aren't just simplistic bass beats and drum riffs, but area actually musical. His songs are just so damn catchy and good. Along with Eminem and a couple other smaller rap artists (Blackalicious) Afroman brings in a new energy and musical talent into the rap community. Afroman, I anxiously await your next effort and hope my recommendation doesn't cause you grief from your friends.Īfroman's "The Good Times" is a fun and talented album. I like (love?) the album and highly recommend it to anyone 18 and older. This is a bunch of folks who have produced an album of good, dirty, infectious fun. Look, this isn't U2, R.E.M., Burning Spear or Bob Marley. Surprisingly, I liked every song on the album and found the inclusion of "Hush" a real treat. I especially enjoyed my wife's reaction to the songs.Though she gasped and turned scarlet, she laughed in spite of herself. There are some raunchy ".man from Nantucket" type of lyrics that made me bust out laughing. The rhymes are fun and the beat is simple and catchy. I guess it's because the guys who made it appear to have had a heck of a good time doing it. So, why in the world do I like this album? I have asked myself this question everytime I listen to it. I own my own business and I think I'm somewhat educated. I'm married and a father of 2 grown children and have 3 grandchildren. And fork over those ’Ritos, amigo.OK, for the record, I'm a 48 year old white male. This major-label debut disc (mostly tracks compiled from two earlier indie albums) also sings the praises of drink ( Let’s All Get Drunk, Tall Cans) and sex to a homemade soundtrack of basic beatboxes and basslines. Not to worry the song’s all a bit of good fun about how dope robs you of your ambition (“I was gonna go to court / Until I got high”). If you haven’t already heard the blunted humour of his novelty hit Because I Got High, well, just ask your kids ’cause they probably have. Afroman The Good Times Label: Not On Label AFRO4400161221 Format: 2 x Vinyl, LP, Reissue, Random Colored Country: USA & Europe Released: 2022 Genre: Hip. He’s this rapper from California who’s sorta like a combination of Cypress Hill and Cheech and Chong, with some Blowfly, Two Live Crew, Humpty Hump and Tha Alkaholiks tossed in. Now, what was I talking about? Oh yeah, dude, Afroman. There are two kinds of people: Those who dig Cheech & Chong movies and … oh, man, are those Doritos? Don’t bogart those things, dude. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing): This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it.
